For the next stage of the Pennine Way I decided to take the train back to Horton-in-Ribblesdale, walk to Hawes where I'd stay overnight, before walking on to Keld and return home by the afternoon bus via Richmond.

The Leeds to Carlisle train at Horton on a beautiful hot summer morning.

Rejoining the PW in the village the route turns right in front of "The Crown"......

....to head up this lane.

Looking back to Horton.

Over to the west is Ingleborough with ts flat summit....

....whilst right in the distance is Whernside.

Over to the east is Pen-y-ghent.

The lane heads gently uphill between walls....

......and occasionally along the edge of the moors....

.....on and on....

.....untl the views to the north start to open up.

Leaving the walls thePW heads onwards until....

....it reaches this gate on Birkwith Moor....

....and descends gently towards Ribblesdale.

....to join a farm track near Old Ing Farm where the PW turns sharp right to.....

....pass by this interesting water course.

The track continues heading, initially, towards Whernside...

....before turning up Ling Gill....

....with its steep rocky sides covered in trees.

Looking down into the dense vegetation in the gill.

The PW now crosses this bridge and begins the climb towards Cam End.

A final backwards glance reveals Pen-y-ghent.

In the distance is Ribblehead Viaduct with Whernside beyond.

The PW now begins to climb steadily....

....to reach the junction with the Dales Way at Cam End.

Looking back towards Ribblehead.

Another backwards glance towards Ingleborough.

At this impressive cairn the Dales Way heads down into the valley at CamPasture.....

......whilst the PW heads steadily upwards.

Looking down to Oughtershaw Side and the farm at Cam Houses.

The PW joins the lane from Cam Houses with Dodd Fell in the background.

Onwards past sheep pen walls onto the open moor....

.....where the PW leaves the tarmac....

...to follow this track for the next few miles....

.....with the first view of upper Wensleydale in the distance.

The lane follows this wall...

....on and on....

....with stunning views into Widdale.

The track gradually falls.

The excellent track continues with....

.....some sections even paved.

Looking back up the valley gives one last view of Ingleborough.

The PW now heads away from the valley side...

.....for a short distance.....

........before reaching this path where it turns uphill.

For the first time for several miles on this section of the PW it's back to a footpath.

There are plenty of cairns on the hillside..

....but lower down the path becomes a bit vague.

....as it drops down to give the first view of Hawes.

The track follows a wall

....until turning into a farm track...

.....leading downhill....

...towards Gaudy House Farm.

Across the valley is Great Shunner Fell which is crossed in the next day's walk.

Finally, it's off the moor and...

...down a paved lane towards Gayle and Hawes.

There's a short cut off section over fields...

.....before joining another paved lane...

....and across a field to reach this housing estate in Gayle.

Finally, the PW passes the Wensleydale cheese factory before a gentle path heads towards the village church.

The PW emerges onto the main street near this pub whilst...

....in the other direction it's clear we are in "Herriot country"
