Deutsche Bundesbahn in 1980 Part 3

Monday 4th August 1980

Monday's journey started with my arrival in Hamburg having travelled overnight from Karlsruhe on D472 Basel - Hamburg. Somewhere en route, probably Frankfurt (M) Hbf 110.484 had been replaced by 103.226.

06:30 inside Hamburg Hbf.

My train to Lübeck Travemünde was a push-pull train propelled by 218.494 and seen ready to depart from the Hbf.

Bad Oldesloe station.

The former Bad Oldesloe Nord signal box. Just visible under the plate with "A56" on are the letters "On". By this time it was no longer a signal box but was used to control the level crossing.

Lübeck Travemünde station building with its clock. There was obviously a fault with the minute digits.

Looking towards Lübeck from the station platforms at Travemünde .

218.494 is at the head of E3021 on its journey back to Hamburg.

Another view looking towards the signal box.

An old DRG DMU (Bauart Köln) was in use as a clubroom Eisenbahner Hochsee-Sportfischer-Verein e.V. This is still in use nearly forty years later and is used for overnight accommodation.

Lübeck Hbf with the 218.494 pulling out with E3021 for Hamburg Hbf.

220.011 runs in to Lübeck Hbf with E3231 from Kiel to Bad Harzburg and Kassel.

Another view of 220.011 departing.

Train E 3014 (Hamburg Hbf-Lübeck) runs in with...

...218.330 sandwiched in the middle of the train.

220.015 was adding some coaches to a Lübeck  Travemünde to Hamburg train.

218.326 arrives at Lübeck Hbf  with D280 "Alpen Express" from Rome to Kobenhaven. In the platform behind the loco are through carriages from Chur to Kobenhavn.

333.040 shunts a DSG sleeper....

...and an SBB couchette which ran from Chur to Kobenhavn. They had started at Chur on train 284 to Basel, then D470 to Lüneburg followed by E2470 to Lübeck and were now being added to the "Alpen Express" to reach Kobenhavn.

A poor view of 218.335 and 218.326 leaving Lübeck Hbf  with D280 "Alpen Express" from Rome to Kobenhaven. 218.335 was added at  Lübeck Hbf  to work this heavy train north.

An almost empty Lübeck Hbf at 09:05

Looking towards Hamburg with Lübeck P (Personenbahnhof) signal box and the loco depot in the distance

A poor backlit image of Deutsche Reichsbahn 132.293 on D1439 Hamburg to Rostock which had arrived from Hamburg behind 218.327.

My journey to Kiel continued behind 212.027. Just visible is that there are two coaches for Kiel followed by 212.043 and another two coaches. These were uncoupled at Eutin.

A DB hinged roof hopper wagon probably at Eutin.

220.013 arrives off the single line section at Malent Grensmuhle with E3157 (Kiel to Lübeck)

Ascherberg station

Raisdorf station

Kiel Hbf looking towards the buffer stops.

218.187 heads E3159 Kiel to Lübeck.

A six car DMU with power cars 612.508 and 613.614 arrives from Hamburg before forming E3519 from Kiel to Hamburg which I travelled on as far as Elmshorn.

218.104 runs into Neumunster with IC672 running from Ludwigshafen to Kiel.

Looking north towards Kiel, Flensburg and Westerland...

...and south towards Hamburg

My  train to Westerland E737 runs in from Köln behind 218.103

At Itzehoe 218.181 waits with a southbound freight.

Itzehoe station with 218.120 on a Hamburg to Heide local stopping train.

798.771 is at Itzehoe and will form a service to Brunsbuttel.

The first view of the Hochdonner bridge over the Kiel Canal (Nord-Ostsee Kanal).

The line is climbing on an embankment to gain the necessary height.

Looking towards the main span over the canal.

Looking back showing almost the complete length of the bridge.

St. Miachaelisdonn station

Heide station.

Husum signal box

218.191 at Niebüll with a car transporter train for Westerland.

Niebüll signal box

Tanker wagon at  Niebüll

The signal box on the Hindenburgdamm where the railway crosses the causeway to the island of Sylt.

All vehicles to Sylt have to use the railway. This is one of the vehicle transporter trains.

Journey's end at Westerland (Sylt).

Two class 218s at the buffer stops at Westerland. My notes tell me that 218.103 which had brought me from Elmshorn was coupled to the opposite end of the train that 218.121 was coupled to. This then formed train 5759 to Niebüll with 218.121 dead on the rear.

A BP tanker wagon..

...a DB sliding door van..

...and a standard DB van are all at Westerland.

An array of DB signals at Westerland.

218.190 and 218.113 have arrived with IC637 from Köln.

A Deutsche Reichsbahn car transporter which were used on the motorail trains from  West Berlin to Westerland.

At Niebüll T3 of the NVAG private railway has a through carriage from Wiesbaden at the rear for the run down to the ferry port at Dagebüll.

218.174 heads a Hamburg to Westerland E3714 at Niebüll whilst 218.121 will follow with train 5742 to Westerland

218.185 is on a car train to Westerland.

A postwar utility bogie parcels van.

My journey from Niebüll to Flensburg was in 798.777 working train 4291 at 17.44.

The view ahead on the soon to be closed line between Niebüll and Flensburg. Note the rather militaristic cap of the driver which DB staff still wore at this time.

The 798 railbus returned immediately to Niebüll.

It's 18.45 on a rather dull evening looking towards Neumunster, Hamburg and the junction with the line from Niebüll.

Looking the opposite direction with the line to Kiel straight ahead and the line to Denmark which curves to the right around the town to cross over the line from Hamburg before heading over the border to Padborg.

My train to Hamburg (E 3645) was formed over DMU 613.614.

A Danish Nohab diesel 1141 arrived with a train from Copenhagen.

At Rendsburg the Flensburg to Hamburg line crosses the Nord-Ostsee Kanal on another high bridge  which involves a spiral turn to run under the bridge before curving around to reach the high girders. Battery railcar 515.592 is on a service from Neumunster.

Rendsburg station.

The train has passed under the bridge and will now climb an embankment through 360 degrees before reaching the bridge at the top right.

The arrow marks the position of the camera.

The Flensburg Hochbrücke seen from the train as it climbs the spiral.

A BR 472 third rail electric multiple unit at Hamburg Hbf.

A poor shot of a BR 470 electric multiple unit on an S Bahn train to Blankenese

103.177 has arrived at Hamburg Hbf with TEE 80 "Diamant" from München.

My overnight journey was on a Hamburg to Stuttgart train pulled by 103.235 and 111.056.
