EGGISHORN

We bought the 2-day Wanderpass at the cable car station in Fiesch (excellent value at 55 CHF and valid on all the cable cars in the Fiesch and Bettmeralp area, as well as the valley railway line). We took the eight o’clock cable car up to Fiescheralp at 2212m. (Kühboden on some maps) and then set off for the Eggishorn summit.

The route starts along a broad vehicle track, which goes to the Bergrestaurant near the Märjelensee via the tunnel under the Tälligrat.  After about 1km the path to the Eggishorn leaves this to climb steadily, but not particularly steeply, from 2180m to 2443m at Talegga.

Here the path turns west (another path heads north to the Märjela) and then climbs to the end of a ridge (2623m) that leads up to the saddle upon which the Eggishorn cable car station is located. The path then zigzags up the ridge quite steeply to reach the saddle and cable car station at 2893m.

Here the view of the Aletschgletscher is outstanding but an even better view can be obtained by heading for the summit. The path is almost entirely over rock – mostly engineered into a step-like path, but at times quite exposed. Initially it drops to a low point at 2869m and then climbs to the summit, complete with cross, at 2926m. The time take from Kühboden was about 2 hours.

From here there is a magnificent 360-degree panorama of high mountains. To the north are the Aletschorn, Jungfrau, Mönch, Eiger (the Sphinx observatory on the Jungfraujoch is visible) and the Finsteraarhorn, the highest of the mountains in the Bernese Oberland. To the southwest lie a whole succession of 4000m peaks in the Valais, Italy and France.

The Aletschgeletscher looking towards Konkordiaplatz.

The mountains are the Dreieckhorn, Jungfrau, Jungfraujoch, Mönch, Eiger and Kamm

The Aletschgletscher itself stretches about 15km north of the Eggishorn. At Konkordiaplatz, about 9km away, three large glaciers and one small converge, the Grosser Aletschfirn. Jungfraufirn, Eroigschneefäld and Grüneggfirn. The three medial moraines can be clearly seen as the flows merge.
