Ernen to Steinhaus

Walked February 2014

Route: Ernen-Mühlebach-Steinhaus 2.5.km each way

Ernen is reached by Postbus from Fiesch railway station.

The winter path from Ernen to Mühlebach follows a lane past the farms at Chumma....

....and continues towards Mühlebach as a broad winter path.

Across the valley is the hamlet of Furgangen with a train leaving for Brig.

Nearing Mühlebach the path becomes narrower with a fence protecting against quite a big drop.

Typical Wallis barns and houses in Mühlebach.

The road is followed through the top part of the village...

...and then it's back on the cleared path. This photo is looking back and shows the village church.

The path continues above the road to Steinhaus...

...before crossing the road and dropping down closer to the river (Rotten)

This photo is looking back towards Mühlebach.

Unfortunately, the winter path ends shortly before this road tunnel...

....but there is a footway through the tunnel....

....and then Steinhaus comes into view. It's possible to get a bus back from here to Ernen several times a day.

The village church at Steinhaus.

On the return walk to Ernen it is possible to vary the route beyond Mühlebach.by staying on the road, crossing the Milibach stream and then walking across teh snow covered meadows.

Beyond Mühlebach this curious structure, probably an irrigation channel is seen.

The path back to Ernen follows the cross country sky tracks....

....until the village is reached. The return walk took about three hours. Be warned there are no refreshment facilities anywhere on this walk except in Ernen.
