Lötschental

The Lötschental from Lauchernalp looking towards the Langgletscher

We took the train and bus from Kandersteg to Wiler via Goppenstein. From here the cable car runs up to Laucherneralp at 1969m. From there the Lötschental Hohenweg was followed to Fafleralp. The path runs on the north side of the valley with superb views of the Bietschorn, the Lonza river and, in the distance, the Langgletscher. The valley is a classic steep sided V shaped glaciated valley.

The Bietschorn

The path climbs to a high point of 2060m and then starts to descend before climbing again to the mountain village of Weritzalp at 2099m. Here the nature of the path changes to be a more typical mountain path and descends to Tellialp at 1861m where we had lunch in the small restaurant.

Not the Schwarzsee but one of several small lakes by the path

Continuing past the Schwarzsee lake, a great favourite for young children swimming, the path steadily falls to reach Fafleralp with its hotel. The road head car park and bus stop is a few minutes further. The total time for the walk is 2˝ to 3 hours.
