Oberwald to Hotel Rhonequelle

 

Leaving the station the path follows the banks of the river until reaching Oberwald village.

Just beyond the church is the junction of the road to Gletsch and the Furka Pass. As can be seen this road is closed by barriers in winter.

The road is cleared for walkers and snow tracked vehicles...

....and climbs at a gentle gradient up the mountain side....

....with views down to the Furka railway tunnel which can be seen in the centre of the photo.

One of the hourly car transporter trains heads towards the tunnel and Realp.

This wasn't something we expected to see - a waterwheel. 

The road turns a series of horrendously tight hairpin bends as it heads uphill.....

....to cross under the old Furka pass railway line. This used to be electrified and was the through route to Andermatt before the tunnel was built and was closed in the winter. Today the line is operated by the Furka Dampfbahn steam railway during the summer months and runs between Oberwald and Realp.

After another hairpin bend the road heads towards the final curve before ...

...reaching the Hotel Rhonequelle. The walk from Oberwald station had taken just over an hour,
