Zermatt to Zmutt

We’d contacted the hotel in Zermatt about arrival times and were promised that we’d be met by their “Wagen” at the station. We took the bus to Stalden and then the BVZ train to Zermatt where we were, indeed, met. The “Wagen” was a small battery powered vehicle with space for luggage and a seat at the back. It was probably the most dangerous part of our holiday as we careered through the narrow and bumpy streets of Zermatt to the hotel!

On arrival we discovered that we had an uninterrupted view of the Matterhorn from a room and balcony. On the first day we didn’t see the summit because of cloud but later ……

The view from the high level path to Zmutt looking towards Furgg. The Kleine Matterhorn is in the cloud to the right of the valley.

We left the town straight away and took the high level path towards the hamlet of Zmutt. This climbs very steeply out of Zermatt on the west side of the valley before descending through meadows to Zmutt.

Views of the Matterhorn, Kleine Matterhorn and Breithorn could be glimpsed through the clouds. After yet more tea and cakes at a restaurant we returned to Zermatt along the easier low-level path.
