Deutsche Bundesbahn in 1980 Part 2

Friday 1st August 1980

After the overnight journey from Bremen I caught train E3561 a München to Salzburg and Berchtesgarden train which is seen here at Rosenheim where I changed trains for the next stage of my journey.

194107 heads south with a freight bound for Austria.

Rosenheim station building.

141038 appeared light engine and coupled up to some  carriages.

111059 runs in on train D281 the "Alpen express" from Copenhagen to Rome. The train included 1st and 2nd class coaches from Copenhagen to Rome (the sleepers went to Basel) through overnight 2nd class coaches from Berlin Stadtbahn to Rome and Puttgarden to Venice as well as day time 2nd class coaches from München to Venice

The München to Venezia vehicles were FS UIC-X coaches

An Italian CIWL restaurant car from München to Roma with a DB 1st class TEE coach next to it and more Italian coaches which I suspect are the portion from Copenhagen

My onward journey was behind 141158 on a Kufstein to Holzkirchen local train. At Kreuzstrasse a München S Bahn service formed of 420168 and 420668 was on a service to Freezing.

At Holzkirchen, where I changed, a six car BR420 set was working a train to Petershausen.

218390 rolls into Holzkirchen with E3513 from München to Lenggries and Tegernsee which split at the junction of Shaftlach. The Tegernsee portion was handed over to the Tegernseebahn here and will be seen later on the return journey.

The  München to Lenggries portion is seen after arrival at Lenggries.

The Tegernseebahn had a number of former DB bogie Umbauwagen one of which is seen here at Lenggries.

Lenggries station.

Returning to München behind the same BR 218 the through carriages from Tegernsee were brought in by the private Tegernseebahn diesel No.11 and were attached at the rear of the Lenggries portion.

An OBB loco 1044.49 runs in on D1424 with D1424 from Bischofshofen to Dortmund.

145162 is on station pilot duties at München Hbf

Another Austrian loco 1042.618 runs light engine out of the station

210006 is seen departing with D366 "Ticino" for Milan via Kempten and Lindau.

218340 is at the head of E3445 from München to Burghausen which I took as far as Mühldorf.

The station building at the curiously named Dorfen Bahnhof - the station is apparently some distance from the town.

Mühldorf locomotive depot with a selection of  BR218s and various types of Kleinlok outside.

The modern station building at Mühldorf

218397 is on a Mühldorf to Burghausen local train.

218344 runs in to Mühldorf with a train from Burghausen to München train

From Mühldorf a pilot loco, 218312,  was coupled to 218340.  Seen arriving is railbus 798691 which I travelled on for my next stage of the journey back to Rosenheim.

Because of the poor state of the bridge over the River Inn trains terminated either side of the bridge at temporary platforms and passengers had to walk across the bridge and board another railbus at the other side for the journey to Rosenheim. The bridge has now been repaired.

At Rosenheim I boarded train D781 a Hamburg to Klagenfurt and Berchtesgarden train behind 111074 which is seen between Rosenheim and Freilassing.

Another view of D781.

1044.35 passes through Freilassing with an Austrian "Korridorzug" from Basel to Wien. These trains ran non stop through Germany from Kufstein to Salzburg.

I had intended  to travel up the line to Berchtesgarden but the train from Dortmund was running very late and I realised that I wouldn't have time to do this section of line with sufficient time to visit Salzburg. Sadly this meant that I didn't have the run behind 144504 which I'd hoped for. Instead I headed over the border to Salzburg behind OBB 1052.605 on a München to Klagenfurt train and spent time watching Austrian trains instead.

1141.05 has just arrived at Salzburg with a train from Linz.

1043.04 is ready to leave with a train to Villach.

1044.41 brings D262 the "Orient Express" from Bucharest to Paris into Salzburg. The train had left Bucharest at 19:05 the day before and was due in to Salzburg at 18:25. Arrival in Paris Est would be 06:44. Today this journey is slower and requires several changes of overnight stays.....

OBB shunter 1161.22 removes coaching stock of an arrival.

OBB express sets powered by power cars 4010.01 and 4010.05 have arrived from Wien.

After set 4010.05 has headed back to Wien there is a better view of 4010.01.

Diesel shunter 2067.18 is shunting in the yards opposite the station.

One of the many overnight trains seen at Salzburg was 110263 on D1218 from Salzburg to Oostende. My own train followed shortly after being  D216 from Klagenfurt to Amsterdam behind 111029.

Saturday 2nd August 1980

My train arrived in Köln the next morning behind 103236 which had brought the train from Stuttgart. After a very short break I headed off to Hagen behind 111129 on an Aachen to Kassel train which had a through carriage portion for the small mountain resort of Winterberg in the Sauerland. My father had been stationed here at the end of WW2 and it was his experiences in Germany in 1945-47 which led to my interest in German railways.

The train has arrived at Hagen behind the orange and grey Rhein Ruhr S Bahn liveried BR111 and...

....a diesel backs on to the train. As can be seen it is only 08:15 - this holiday is 24 hour train watching with a vengeance!

216209 is ready to depart for Kassel.

The train on the opposite platform is another link to my father's experiences. It started at Bestwig and in bound for Mönchen Gladbach. The diesel locomotive that brought it in has been replaced by 110407. Not the interesting carriage behind the locomotive. This is one of the early DB 26m long centre door carriages with the recessed end doors. Later versions had flush doors like the vehicle next to it.

212299 arrives with a Neuenrade to Hagen local train with a pre-war DR coach and early DB centre door coach in the short lived blue and cream livery without the lower cream stripe.

Neheim Husten station on the line between Schwerte and Bestwig.

216209 has arrived at Bestwig and the Kassel portion is ready to depart.

Looking east towards Bestwig signal box and the yards with 218445 on a train of stone hoppers.

Betwig locomotive depot still with its water tower which features in several photos on the website of my father's account of his travels in Germany.

212313 has backed onto the train.

At Bigge some of the counter weights used to operate the points and signals are in a good position for a photograph.

218135 runs into Bigge with a Winterberg to Essen train.

On the climb between Silbach and Winterberg.

211313 is at Winterberg with train E3482 for Dortmund.

I returned to Bestwig from Winterberg and then caught a Düsseldorf to Warburg train hauled by 218144 as far as the junction station of Brilon Wald.  This is the view looking east towards Warburg and Kassel.

Brilon Wald station looking west. The line to Bestwig and Hagen curves off to the right whilst the line to Korbach goes ahead past the chemical works.

Brilon Wald station building.

The west end of the station with the line to Bestwig and Hagen disappearing into the tunnel. The line to Korbach climbs behind the signal box.

From Brilon Wald I travelled in railbus 798603 on train 6439 to Korbach.

Willingen station looking towards Korbach.

At Usseln 216098 passed us on E3598 from Giessen to Altenbeken one of the so called 'Heckeneilzug' trains which were long distance services travelling over branch lines.

Korbach station looking towards the north with my train from Brilon Wald waiting to return.

Korbach looking north towards Brilon Wald and the lines to Bad Wildungen and Kassel.

Looking south from Korbach towards Frankenberg.

I changed trains at Korbach into a Kassel to Bad Wildungen local behind 216224 which took me the short distance to...

......to Sachsenhausen (Waldeck) where I changed to railbus 798624 on a Wabern to Korbach working to return to Korbach.

For the next stage of my journey I used one of the long distance branch line expresses, train E3203 from Bucholz to Frankfurt. This was headed by 216206 .

The train runs into Herzhausen with the River Eder on the left. The famous Eder Dam, destroyed by the RAF in WW2.

Frankenberg station seen from the arriving train.

Frankenberg station with railbus 798829 on a Marburg to Frankenberg working.

216206 is seen at Marburg and continued under the wires towards Giessen where I imagine the diesel would be replaced by and electric locomotive.

A three car railbus set headed by 798642 is outside the loco shed at Marburg.

141240 has arrived on a Kassel to Marburg push-pull train.

141043 runs into Marburg with a Kassel to Giessen local service.

A Frankfurt to Treysa runs into Marburg behind 141251.

My onward train from Marburg was D870 a Frankfurt to Bielefeld service behind former TEE liveried loco 112500 which  hauled my train as far as Kassel.

According to the station clock at Treysa my train was running on time.

Wabern station is the junction for the Bad Wildungen branch.

At Guntershausen 150079 heads a northbound train of concrete sleepers.

110372 stands at the bufferstops at Kassel Hbf having brought in D775, a Hamburg to Wiesbaden train. This train reversed at Kassel and went on behind another BR110.

After reversal at Kassel the train continued through Warburg....

...to Altenbeken where I left the train 110427 was the train loco after the reversal at Kassel.

Altenbeken is a triangular junction with platforms on two sides of the triangle. This is the side which leads south to Kassel.

Altenbeken looking east towards Hameln and Hannover

Altenbeken looking towards the west and Paderborn and Hamm.

Three car DMU 624506 and 624649 have arrived on a terminating service from Holzminden.

One of the then new BR614s is stabled in the carriage sidings.

624506 is seen again with the typical DB flip over departure boards.

Lighting conditions were poor as 141046 prepares to depart with an Altenbeken to Detmold train.

Altenbeken signal box with the line to Kassel curving off to the right.

From Altenbeken I headed off to Hannover on an Altenbeken to Hannover train made up of 4 of these 'Hannover area' coaches and 2 'Silberlinge'  propelled by 141282

Hameln station looking towards Hannover

A glance back along the train at Hameln.

141282 is seen at Hannover Hbf after arrival from Altenbeken.

An atmospheric photo of 111069 with D499 the Hamburg to Zagreb overnight Liegewagen and Schlafwagen service. The train also conveyed through carriages and sleeping coaches to Belgrade and Wien.

My accommodation for the night was the next train in the same platform;  D1381 from Hamburg to Berchtesgarden, Salzburg and Oberstdorf hauled by 111110. I travelled in the through Liegewagen to Oberstdorf

3rd August 1980

Kempten Hbf with DMU 628009 on a Kempten to Garmisch-Partenkirchen via Reutte in Tirol train.

The austere platforms at the new station at Kempten which had replaced the original terminus.

218399 had taken over the Hamburg to Oberstdorf through carriages at Augsburg and is seen here on the approach to Immenstadt in the Allgau.

At Immenstadt 218474 had brought in an Oberstdorf to Kempten train whilst 628009 in about to leave for Lindau.

218399 ran round its train and is ready to depart form Immenstaft.

Blaichach (Allg) station.

The major station on the Oberstdorf branch is at Sonthofen.

Sonthofen signal box

Alstadten station.

218419 passes my train at Alstadten with E962, an Oberstdorf to Münster

The final station on the line is at Langenwang and we are in sight of the hills around Oberstdorf.

218399 stands at the bufferstops at Oberstdorf with the overnight train from Hamburg,

The station from the street.

Looking towards Immenstadt with the carriage sidings in the distance.

I travelled back to Immenstadt on two car DMU 628015 and 628005. The train then continued to Kempten

Fischen station.

Back at Immenstadt there are three trains in view - a loco hauled Ulm to Oberstdorf,  628007 and 628024 on a Kempten to Rothenbach train and on the right the Oberstdorf to Kempten DMU.

The local Kleinlok was 323591.

From Immenstadt to Lindau I travelled on D360 a München to Geneva and Freiburg made up mostly of SBB coaches. The locos were 210001 and 210005.

Another view of the train.

The approach to Lindau Hbf with the electrified line from Austria coming in on the left.

Crossing the Bodensee causeway to island that Lindau is situated on.

Lindau Hbf with OBB 1110.27 at the head of a Stuttgart to Bludenz service.

The München to Geneva and Freiburg train after arrival at Lindau with gas-turbine fitted locos 210001 and 210005. The through carriages for Freiburg have already been removed from the rear of the train and will be seen below.

Swiss international coaches make up most of the train...

...with the exception of this DB coach in the short lived POP livery. I suspect that this was an additional coach for a party group as there are paper labels stuck on the carriage windows at either end.

OBB  1110.18 runs in with train E2712, an Innsbruck to Ulm train with through carriages to Dortmund and Hamburg train and through carriage from Schruns on the Montafonerbahn to Dortmund.

SBB 11198, one of the Re4/4s fitted with a wide pantograph contact strip for operation in Austria and Germany is ready to leave for Geneva.

I had arrived at Lindau at 10:35 and the through carriages for Freiburg had been shunted over to the none electrified "German" platforms. Departure was scheduled for 10:58 and the clock is showing 10:56 so I'm obviously leaving it to the last minute before boarding.

Taken from the train as we leave Lindau Hbf on the right is 218903 which is on the Innsbruck to Ulm train seen arriving earlier. This followed my train 8 minutes later

I obviously took this photo on the approach to Friedrichshafen Stadt station to show the complex arrangement of signals.

Standing in Friedrichshafen Stadt was 218256 on E2060, a Strasbourg to Lindau train. This conveyed couchettes from Paris to Lindau and through carriages from Paris to Innsbruck.

At the rear of the four SNCF coaches was this Austrian composite coach which I suspect was the through coach to Innsbruck - if so it would be a pretty dismal experience!

This SNCF couchette - 1st and 2nd class is labelled for Lindau.

I obviously got out of the train at Friedrichshafen to take a photo of the loco shed - Railbus 798825 and a Class 215 diesel can be seen.

218290 is seen again on the München to Freiburg train in front of the station building at Friedericshafen Stadt.

The railway runs along the shores of the Bodensee (Lake Constance) and here is Uberlingen station ...

...and its goods yard.

There follows some attractive stretches along the lake side, with drivers often using the horn at foot crossings.

798527 was passed at Ludwigshafen (Bodensee) working a Radolfzell to Uberlingen local.

On the approach to Radolfzell these ballast wagons were seen.

Radolfzell finds the journey back under the wires and a modern signal box. This is looking west towards Singen.

The high platforms of the modernised station looking east.

Some pre-war coaches in use as accommodation for track workers were a common sight all over Germany at this time.

These 4 and 6 wheel former DB and DRG coaches are workshop vehicles.

The east end of Radolfzell station looking towards  the junction for Konstanz and Friederichshafen.

My next train was on train E1301 a Berlin Stadtbahn to Konstanz train via Hof  behind 110239.

Some period motor cars seen crossing the bridge over the River Rhine at Konstanz.

Konstanz station

110166 has arrived on a Wiesbaden to Konstanz train.

In the Swiss part of the station was Mittel-Thurgaubahn driving trailer 303....

...and power car No. 14 with a train from Kreuzlingen in Switzerland.

110232, on a Konstanz to Offenburg train, took me on from Konstanz back through Radolfzell and on to Singen. This train also had through carriages to Stuttgart.

Another photo of 110232..

...and the postal sorting car attached to the train

Stabled in the station was 215089 on the stock of a Pforzheim to Konstanz excursion train.

110232 is seen again at Singen ready to depart for Offenburg.

150192 runs light through the station.

218277 departs with a Singen to Basel Badischer Bahnhof train whilst 110289 is waiting to take over a Zürich to Stuttgart express...

...which arrived from Schaffhausen behind 218278.

From Singen I took a Singen to Villingen local train behind 139315. This is Immendingen station

A typical level crossing.

139315 is seen at Donaueschingen.

211343 is on a Villingen to Freiburg train which the diesel will haul as far as Neustadt. In effect I had now come full circle as I'd used a similar train between Neustadt and Villingen on the 30th July.

A brake 2nd class coach is carrying Villingen to Freiburg destination boards....

...as is this 'Silberlinge' 2nd class.

The next step of my journey was behind 139560 hauling a Konstanz to Offenburg train.

St Georgen station on the Black Forest line.

Sommerau station near the summit of the line is at 832m above sea level.

These next three photos show the curving nature and numerous tunnels as the line descends from the summit at Summerau.

Hornberg station at 384m is well down the hill from the summit.

138560 has arrived at Hausach where i left the train.

Hausach station

kleinlok 323839 by the goods shed.

798781 was working a local all the way from Offenburg to Villingen  over the Black Forest Line.

215092  arrives with a Freudenstadt to Hausach train.

I continued behind 215010 on a Strasbourg to Stuttgart via Freudenstadt train - another of DB's long distance semi-fast trains over secondary lines.

These photos give a taste of the scenery along the line between Hausach and Freudenstadt.

Schiltach station

At Alpirsbach 798720 passed on an Eutingen to Hausach service.

Stabled Freudenstadt Hbf were some of Apfelpfeil tour train coaches - the company had become bankrupt the year before and were in store.

The station building at Freudenstadt Hbf

218161 brings train E773, from Kiel to Freudenstadt into Freudenstadt Stadt station. The train was banked by 218294. On the left is my train E3606 to Karlsruhe with through (overnight) carriages to Berlin behind 218297.

Between Freudenstadt Stadt and Baiersbronn the line drops from 739m to 546m in just 6km (roughly a 1 in 31 gradient).

Baiersbronn station at 18:35.

218153 is seen at Klosterreichenbach with a Karlsruhe to Freudenstadt local train.

218297 is seen after arrival at Karlsruhe Hbf.

Unfortunately the negative for this photo was lost when it was used for the cover photo of a magazine called Euromodel Rail Review. This is a scan from the magazine and shows 103199 leaving Karlsruhe with IC109 the "Rheinpfeil" from Hamburg to Basel.

The north end of the train shed at Karlsruhe Hbf

I left Karlsruhe on train D472 from Basel to Hamburg behind 110484 at 22:00. The train with car transporters seen on the left is D1352 from Lorrach (near Basel) to Berlin.
